The Itinerary
The Lago Maggiore Express offers you an unforgettable journey by train and boat. The day trip on Lake Maggiore and through the Centovalli and Vigezzo Valley, with a "loop" itinerary, which can also be reversed, can start from any of the locations along the entire route.
A day full of contrasts awaits you: you will travel to Italy and to the southern part of Switzerland (Canton Ticino). You can sail on all of Lake Maggiore admiring the Borromean Islands, the Castles of Cannero Riviera, the Brissago Islands, and Ascona, and reach Locarno at the northern end of the lake. You will have the opportunity to have lunch on board or with a packed lunch. With the picturesque narrow-gauge train of the Vigezzina-Centovalli Railway, you will cross one of the wildest and most romantic areas. Trenitalia and Trenord trains guarantee the connection between Domodossola and Lake Maggiore in both directions.

It is highly recommended to reserve a seat on the Centovalli train by visiting the website at a cost of €4.00 per seat.
Reservation is mandatory for groups of more than 8 people.
Presenting the LME ticket the day after its validity, at a Navigazione Lago Maggiore land ticket office, you can purchase a daily free circulation ticket with a discount of approximately 50% (child rate €3.50 for the Italian basin).
The LME travel ticket is non-refundable.

Stresa
A melody resonating on the shores of the lake.
Famous for the "Stresa Music Weeks" dedicated to the celebration of classical music, the city’s territory includes coastal, insular, mountainous, and hilly areas. The part that embraces Lake Maggiore offers a view of the Borromean Islands, while the mountainous part invites visitors to enjoy the Mottarone ski resort and the interesting Alpinia Botanical Garden.
Baveno
A leap between nature and stories by the lake.
In the territory that during the Roman era included the Saveriana Augusta road connecting Mediolanum to Verbanuus Lacus (Lake Maggiore), lies a tourist complex known for art, nature, and sports. Numerous historic villas illuminate the area’s streets, in addition to facilities for water and land sports activities.
Domodossola
A slow and fast rhythm infiltrating the heart of the Ossola Valley.
Domodossola, in the center of seven alpine valleys, is a splendid town, a junction points between Italy and Switzerland, with its international station and a medieval historic center with a pentagonal layout. A short walk from the city center stands the Sacro Monte Calvario, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On Saturdays, Piazza Mercato and the surrounding streets host the beloved market, surrounded by the main historic buildings, and now splendid museum venues such as Palazzo San Francesco, Palazzo Silva, and Casa de Rodis.
Angera - Madonna della Riva
A mystical atmosphere on the shores of Lake Maggiore.
In Angera, whose name is inspired by the gravel on the shore (in glarea), stands the Sanctuary of Madonna della Riva, born from the miracle of "sweating blood" when a woman who used to pray to an effigy of the Madonna noticed the constant presence of blood on it, thus proclaiming it a miracle. The anniversary is celebrated every June 27, attracting thousands of faithful who participate in the celebration with a procession of boats from the Sanctuary to the Pertegora islet and back.
Santa Caterina - Sanctuary of Santa Caterina del Sasso
A suggestive balcony overlooking the Borromean Gulf, Stresa, and the islands.
With a splendid view of the Borromean Gulf, Stresa, and the islands, the majestic Sanctuary of Santa Caterina del Sasso rises, a monastery perched on the eastern shore of Lake Maggiore. Art and history intertwine in this hermitage born from a vow to Saint Catherine of Alexandria by a merchant who survived a storm. The complex has been managed by Dominican, Carmelite, and Benedictine monks and is now a destination for numerous pilgrimages.
Locarno - Sacred Mountain of Madonna del Sasso
A journey through the sacred and architectural beauties.
In Orsilia, on top of a rocky spur, stands the Sanctuary of Madonna del Sasso. An ancient religious complex called Sacred Mountain, consisting of the Basilica of the Annunciation, the Via Crucis and its stations in small chapels, the Chapel of the Pietà in the courtyard, the Lamentation over the Dead Christ, the Last Supper, and the Holy Spirit placed under the portico of the sanctuary. The staircase, the cemetery cross, the churchyard, and finally the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, known as Madonna del Sasso, complete the complex.
Borromean Islands
A harmony of colors emerges from the waters.
Surrounded by the lake’s shores, the islands rise like treasures emerging from the waters. Their character is shaped by particular and unusual vegetation with over 2000 species. On Isola Madre, there is unusual fauna such as white peacocks, oriental birds, and golden pheasants. To admire the multicolored blooms present all year round, Isola Bella is the one that holds a riot of vividly colored species.
Villa Taranto
A long journey through distant countries.
Nestled in the territory of Verbania, there is a place that crosses distant countries and their long histories. Villa Taranto embodies the concept of a botanical garden hosting very rare collections of plants and flowers lining small waterfalls and ponds for water lilies and lotus flowers. Thanks to the intuition of Captain McEacharn, the villa’s treasure has been accessible to thousands of visitors since 1940.
Vigezzo Valley
An immersive journey through woods and wild nature.
The heart of the Vigezzo Valley, Santa Maria Maggiore, includes much of the Val Grande National Park, a protected alpine area characterized by wild nature, ideal for nature lovers and trekkers. Vast forests stretch across the area, characterized by their lush nature.
